PHP2Shell: Critical Vulnerabilities in PHP

CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619

Critical severity

CVSS 9.2 / 10

Executive Summary

Two critical vulnerabilities, called PHP2Shell, have been identified that could be exploited to compromise PHP-based servers and applications. Their criticality requires immediate assessment, validation of exposure and priority application of containment and remediation measures.

Technical Implications

1. Possible remote code execution on vulnerable servers.

2. Compromise of web applications, credentials, configuration files and exposed assets.

3. Escalation of the incident to other systems through lateral movement or abuse of access.

4. Operational disruption, alteration of services and impact on availability.

5. Increased risk of ransomware, information exfiltration and fraud.

Risk under the LOPDP

If the affected systems process personal data, the exploitation of these vulnerabilities could result in unauthorized access, alteration, loss, disclosure or extraction of information. This compromises the confidentiality, integrity and availability of the data, increases regulatory risk and may trigger internal obligations regarding incident management, corrective measures, impact assessment and liabilities arising from the Organic Law on Personal Data Protection of Ecuador (Ley Orgánica de Protección de Datos Personales, LOPDP).

Recommended Actions

1. Identify Internet-exposed PHP assets and validate affected versions.

2. Apply the vendor’s patches, updates and mitigations as a priority.

3. Review logs, indicators of compromise and anomalous activity on servers and applications.

4. Restrict unnecessary exposure, harden configurations and strengthen WAF/IPS/EDR controls.

5. Verify backups, segmentation, privileges and incident response procedures.

6. Coordinate with security, legal and data protection teams if personal data is processed.

Message for Technology Management

The criticality of PHP2Shell requires immediate attention. The exposure window must be reduced to a minimum through rapid identification, prioritized remediation and intensive monitoring of critical assets.

Recommendation: prioritize this alert within the vulnerability and incident management process.
